How to Track ChatGPT Traffic to Your Website
ChatGPT is now a real traffic source. Here is how to measure it properly, which pages it sends people to, and what that traffic is worth.
Why ChatGPT traffic is hard to see
When ChatGPT recommends your website and a user clicks the link, the visit does not always arrive with a clean referrer. Links opened from the ChatGPT apps, copied links and some browser settings strip the referrer, so the visit shows up as direct in classic analytics. Other visits carry utm_source=chatgpt.com or a chatgpt.com referrer and get lumped into generic "referral" traffic.
The result: most site owners underestimate how much traffic AI assistants already send them, and have no idea which content earns those visits.
Three ways to track ChatGPT visits
1. Filter referrals manually
In your analytics tool, filter sessions where the source contains chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com. This works, but only catches visits that keep their referrer or UTM tag, and you need to repeat it for every AI assistant.
2. Build a custom channel group
You can create an "AI assistants" channel with a regex over known AI domains. Better, but it needs maintenance every time a new assistant appears, and it still says nothing about whether the AI actually mentions your brand.
3. Use a dedicated AI traffic tracker
A purpose-built tool classifies AI visits automatically, keeps the list of AI sources up to date and connects traffic with the answers that generate it. Citelytic recognises visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, DeepSeek, Grok, Meta AI, Mistral and You.com.
Citelytic shows your ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude traffic in one dashboard. One script tag, free plan included.

- AI share of total traffic – how much of your traffic already comes from assistants, and how fast it grows.
- Landing pages – which pages AI assistants send people to. These are the pages AI considers authoritative.
- Conversions per source – AI visitors often arrive with a concrete question and convert better than average.
- Citations – whether ChatGPT or Perplexity name your brand for the questions your customers ask.
How to set it up with Citelytic
- Create a free account.
- Paste one script tag into the
<head>of your site (works with WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Framer and plain HTML). - Open the dashboard – AI visits appear in real time.
FAQ
Does Google Analytics show ChatGPT traffic?
Partly. Visits that keep a chatgpt.com referrer or UTM tag appear as referral traffic, but visits without a referrer are counted as direct, so ChatGPT traffic is usually underreported.
Do I need to change my website to track ChatGPT?
Only once: you add one script tag to your site header. After that, AI visits are classified automatically.
How much traffic does ChatGPT send?
It varies widely by niche. Informational, B2B and software sites tend to see the most. The only reliable answer is to measure your own site.
